C47 Skytrain

The C-47 Skytrain was a derivative of the DC-3 which had been extremely successful as a pre-war civilian airliner, Plying its trade across the continental USA the DC-3 was the first airliner to be able to make money purely by transporting passengers alone.

When WW2 broke out the DC-3 was adapted for military use with a rear cargo door fitted and a strengthened floor amongst other adaptations. More than 10,000 were built during and after WW2 and some are still in use today in various guises, a testament to the outstanding design by Douglas of what is now an iconic aircraft.

Our 1/32 scale version ‘Boogie Baby’ was built in 1943 as a C-47A-1-DK with the US military serial 42-92277 and took part in the D-Day landings.
She was transferred to the RAF as a Dakota III with the serial FL633 and was then sold off in July 1946 becoming TC-YOL with Turkish Air Lines and remained with them until August 1969, when she then loined Sociedade Açoreana de Transportes Aéreos (SATA) as CS-TAI.
In 1975 she was sold to the Isreali Air Force, who operated her as ‘029’ with the civil-style callsign 4X-FNT.
She returned to the USA in September 1999, becoming N751A, and is now operated by the WW2 Airborne Demonstration Team, based in Lawton, Oklahoma.
