WOW538 P-47 Thunderbolt
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was a World War II era fighter aircraft produced by the United States between 1941 and 1945. Its primary armament was eight .50-caliber machine guns and in the fighter-bomber ground-attack role it could carry five-inch rockets or a bomb load of 2,500 pounds (1,103 kg).
When fully loaded the P-47 weighed up to eight tons making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. The P-47 was designed around the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine which was also used by two U.S. Navy fighters, the Grumman F6F Hellcat and the Vought F4U Corsair.
The Thunderbolt was effective as a short-to-medium range escort fighter in high-altitude air-to-air combat and ground attack in both the World War II European and Pacific theatres. The P-47 was one of the main United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) fighters of World War II and served with other Allied air forces including France, Britain, and Russia.
A more modern-day U.S. ground-attack aircraft, the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, takes its name from the P-47.
Our new 1/30 scale P47D was flown by Lieutenant Colonel Francis S. “Gabby” Gabreski (Jan 28th 1919 – Jan 31st 2002). Commanding Officer 61st Fighter Squadron, 56th Fighter Group. “Gabby” Gabreski was classed as an ‘ace’ in 2 wars, he was credited with 28 enemy aircraft destroyed during WW II and during the Korean War added 6.5 kills to his tally.
On May 22 1944, Gabreski shot down 3 FW190s over an airfield in northwest Germany and on July 5th 1944, became America’s leading ace in the ETO. This total was never surpassed by any U.S. pilot fighting the Luftwaffe. He became a POW on July 20,1944 after his plane’s prop hit the ground during a strafing run on a German airfield, he evaded capture for five days before being caught by the Germans.
61st Fighter Squadron flew out of RAF Kings Cliffe and RAF Boxted. From 1943 to 1945, produced 19 aces, the highest of any squadron in Europe, destroying 248 aircraft in the air and 67.5 aircraft on the ground. In 1944, it was recognized as the first fighter squadron in the European Theatre to score over 100 victories.
